The laundry room is one of the busiest of areas in the home. Every single day, there is constant need for clean and well-ironed clothes and at the same time, have a place to ensure all dirty clothes are stored properly until the next laundry day.
Because of this, there is a greater pressure to ensure that it is kept organised and clean by the homeowners. Apart from the bathroom, it is also susceptible to pests and other water-related problems. Here are some ways to maximise the space and make sure the laundry room is amazing and does the job on your next home renovation:
1. Provide more baskets and label them accordingly
No matter what, the smell strategy when figuring out if the clothes are dirty or not is so college years. Instead, purchase colour-coded hampers to let you know which items are for the following:
· Green – clean and ironed
· Red – dirty and needs to be laundered
· Blue – needs to be ironed
· Orange – clean and needs to be repaired/hemmed/adjusted
· White – clean and for donation/for charity
· Brown – clean and for sale/for giving away to friends
· Yellow – for storage
This way, you are not dealing with heaps of clothing at any given time. You can also colour code for the kind of clothing such as underwear, office wear, home clothes, etc. This prevents mixing clothes that you would rather be stashed away in storage or those you are ready to let go of. This style makes your cabinet much more clutter free and you know exactly when (or not!) to go shopping.
2. Make the room several steps down than the rest of the home
Instead of making the laundry room the same level as the rest of the house, make it at least three steps lower. This will ensure that your whole house will not be easily flooded when something in the plumbing breaks or gives way due to the pressure of the water or negligence. The benefit of doing so also makes the pressure of the water be not as hard thus helping everyone save on water costs.
If possible, placing the laundry room at the ground floor also achieves the same goal of saving money as well as making the bathrooms at the second floor work better in terms of water pressure. As much as you can, do not place the laundry room beside the kitchen as the bottles can be mixed up and place the lives of the people in the home in danger. Another way to keep the place safe is by not removing the labels on the generally white bottles of liquid detergent and bleach and by putting them on locked areas in the laundry room. Compared to the common notion that placing them on higher areas of open cabinets, having them locked on areas that are lower makes them more child-friendly and inaccessible as kids have a tendency to climb shelves and at the same time, the chemicals may spill if not secured before returning them to the cabinets.
The best bet when it comes to building the laundry room is in the garden where there is fresh air and there is almost zero access from the main house by little kids.
