Love to travel? Why not let your very own bedroom show your flair for getting on a plane and reaching different places reflect it?

The passion for travel is a start off point in renovating a bedroom. As it is, it provides a lot of ideas for the design and overall look of the place and gives many options as to how well it would turn out. So if you are inclined to unleash in your own bedroom your love for travel or if you are a designer that has a client with the incurable wanderlust bite, read on:

 1.     Take the time to prep the space.

To give the room a more expansive feel to it, take down the walls that make the room feel small. This provides more space to incorporate a lot of changes to the space without giving up on storage. For really small square meters, you can elevate the bed or the study area to give it more prominence.

Take advantage of the time as well to remove old wallpaper from the walls and mouldy carpets. Remove all clutter by recycling, selling, or giving them away. Also, have a pest control professional come in to ensure there are no pests. Themed rooms, once done, are very unforgiving – all the areas that were not given due diligence will show. Also, you do not want to finish the renovation only to find out that you have to start over again.

 2.     Forget about traditional art

When creating a travel-themed room, or any themed space for that matter, eschewing traditional ways of decorating is necessary, if not required. For example, you can use huge maps as framed artwork which can go on the walls around the room. You can also make a big mural out of a map, place it on a corkboard and enjoy using colourful pins to mark the places that you have been to or are planning to go to. If you have tickets or passes or other travel paraphernalia, frame them professionally and hang them! It adds pizzazz to the room in an instant.

You can also use miniature items that signify travel as well. If you can visit vintage or flea markets, get some airplanes, boats, or hot air balloons to place on the counters and open shelving as accents. You can also mimic the travel look with your lighting. Instead of the usual lighting fixtures, why not copy how airplanes do it complete with swiveling lights or push button side lights embedded on your side table? It makes your room even more unique.

 3.     Mind the covers

Are there certain countries or places you love so much? Use them for your décor and furnishings too! If you love the United Kingdom, then have the Union Jack insignia on your throw pillows or table consoles. If you love the beaches of the Maldives, then have an area that gives off the feeling of being in the beach.

When it comes to building a travel-inspired room, sky’s literally the limit!
