Making a home more livable either by updating the design or doing a major overhaul is necessary for about once every three to five years. But if you can’t wait to do a quick update to make your home look more elegant without spending a lot, what can you do?

A little nip and tuck wouldn’t hurt and here are the areas you can focus on to make it happen:

1.     Fix shabby cement work.

If you love the look and feel of cobblestones on your driveway, doing a bit of cleanup on the current shabby cement work can instantly make you feel like you are walking on the streets of old Italy. Have someone do your cement tiles a good scrubbing to remove moss and mildew and at the same time, improve the grouting.

While you’re at it, gardening will also make the outside of your house look more spectacular with just a bit of soil and the right seeds. In general, gardens that are lined with the same kind of flowers or buds look more kept and put together than let’s say one with a mishmash of different species. The monochrome colours make your garden and your whole house from the outside look like a million bucks instantly. Of course, weeds are never great to look at and tall grass makes for a home that looks deserted. So make sure to schedule those grass maintenance sessions regularly.

2.     Color code your library.

Most home libraries are organized by topic, but color coding them or arranging them by the color of their binding makes for a very arresting sight, which needs not a lot of accents in the long run, leading to lesser clutter in your study.

Also, open up those book cabinets or make the enclosures into glass if you are a stickler for dust.

3.     Change the floorings.

This may entail much more budget, but if there is one thing you can do and nothing else to save on renovation costs, change your floorings. In general, save the marble like tiles for the restroom or the barbecue area and make the rest of the house shine with fresh wood panel flooring. It will make the home look more inviting, make the design elements pop out, and just ground the whole house well. For the bathrooms, you can use cheaper outdoor tiles in darker shades too to prevent slippage and instant update on its look.

4.     Purchase new mattresses and pillows.

Sunken beds and thinned out pillows are not a good thing to see, not to mention, not too inviting to sleep in. If you cannot salvage them by adding in some more cotton inside, throw them out and buy new ones! It’s not as expensive as you think and can benefit you in the long run as you enjoy better sleep and rest every night.

5. Repaint.

Repainting a room in earth and neutral colors like cream, beige, or grays and adding a pop of color like reds or yellows can make the space look more sophisticated and well-kept.
